What is it?
Kailani is a new, high-quality artisanal musical instrument, developed in Austria in 2012 by Michael Merkle. During a deep meditative state, Michael questioned, “What are the sounds of the musical instruments played by the angels?” The reply came, channelled through, with the concept of the Kailani. It is an instrument that is intuitively played and produces crystalline and celestial sounds. The Kailani creates harmonious sounds that may be used for healing, music, and pleasure.
Kailani is made of high grade aluminium alloy with precise tuning that emanates high resonance, long sustain, and rich harmonic sounds. Every combination of notes in a Kailani is like opening a distinct portal that benefits introspection, serenity, and limitless self-expression. The artisanal wooden frame, built from selected hardwoods, is architected in a beautiful hexagonal format (based in Sacred Geometry) that helps amplify the instrument´s energetic potential.
Kai means sea in Hawaiian, and Lani means sky (or heaven). With the range of sounds it produces, Kailani indeed encompasses both heaven and ocean.
Who can play Kailani?
Kailani can be played by any person who feels called to the instrument. No previous musical education, skill or knowledge is needed. It is an intuitive instrument.
Kailani invites singers to accompany and explore their voices, while allowing musicians to expand their creative process. Novices to music, as well as children, may play it to help develop sensitivity and creativity, and Healers may use it to open doors to a new and exciting venue of Sound Healing. Any person, regardless of their musical development, can empower themselves to produce music.
The sounds emanated by the Kailani create a unique space of quietness, serenity, introspection, and crystalline vibrations, inviting the presence of deep relaxation and meditation to the environment.
This blessed, angelic artwork has changed my life and those around me. She’s been such a profound integration as part of my medicine work, sound healings, and gatherings. Truly an instrument from the Divine and I’m so so grateful and blessed to bring forth this joy, light, love and healing into the world. I introduce the music to as many as I can, and when I connect with my Kailani it instantly transports me to another place and soothes any energies that I wish to shift to a higher vibration. How is Kailani played?
Kailani can be played with fingers or with mallets. Either way, the player can explore different ways of producing harmonies and consonant scales, catered to the player’s intuition and their way of playing.
Kailani can be positioned by placing the instrument warped within the player’s thighs and held by the feet; by hanging the instrument on a wall (special hanging wires are built into the instrument’s frame,) or by loose hanging e.g. from a tree branch. It can also be positioned with our custom made Kailani Stand.

Applied Fields
Kailani sounds create a very unique space of stillness and crystalline energies. It invites the presence of deep relaxation and meditation for both the player and the audience. This instrument is a perfect addition for: meditative gatherings and retreats; yoga classes; music therapy; music education for infants; and any area of application where one wishes to uplift consciousness, inspire, and integrate.
Kailani works well in accompanying other instruments as well as for solo-playing, especially for musicians and novices who appreciate intuitive and indigenous music.
Kailani can be a natural tool for healers who work with, or wish to include Sound Healing in their work. It is also a great addition for plant-medicine work.

This is the sound that transports me directly to my inner self, that inspires and elevates me. Making me vibrate and remember the moments I thought forgotten. These memories arise in front of me like an old yet revealing movie. So then, the pieces of the puzzle that lacked in my consciousness, of who I am today and that were kept away in my subconscious, awaiting the moment to awaken, finally became united. Every time I connect with this sound, I become myself again and ressignify my past experiences. Everything becomes more present, stronger, and more potent.

Due to its intuitive quality, Kailani is a great tool for introducing musicality to children and any person who wishes to initiate a musical practice, independently of previous musical abilities or knowledge. Kailani turns the musical awakening into a fun, intuitive and playful experience.
I just used the Kailani in therapy with my wife and it was very impactful for her, reporting a very strong opening and channelling. I personally felt great ease to harmonise myself with the instrument. I facilitate experiences with my project Sound Love Healing, in retreats and courses. Despite this, I am not a musician and I don’t feel inclined to rationally understand this, because I want to focus on exploring the sound without any rules or given patterns. This is what I want to awaken in others: that anyone can work with vibrational healing instruments, and Kailani definitely is a marvellous instrument for spreading this idea.

Musical scales
Kailani comes in pre-defined musical scales that do not need maintenance or re-tuning. We carefully picked these note combinations to facilitate a harmonic and intuitive experience. For those that are unfamiliar with music theory, it is enough to listen, and feel which scale resonates with you and your intentions.
